The Foundation
La Fundación Universitaria is divided into seven seminars: Literature, History, Thought, Art and Iconography, Law and Classical Culture, Education, and Theology. Its purpose is to provide instruction, preparation, and further study in these subjects for young people pursuing university or higher education.
It works towards the promotion and dissemination of Spanish culture in the field of Humanities within the university context, primarily promoting research, funding, and publishing academic works created by funded researchers or other individuals whose work is deemed relevant. This mission follows the motto displayed on its coat of arms: “Sub halitu fidei, in altum progrediar” (Under the breath of faith, I will progress towards the heights).
The seminars organize academic activities, such as conferences, courses, and book presentations, related to their specialties. In addition, each seminar publishes research papers in one or more collections, along with an annual academic journal.
History
The Foundation was established by the couple Doña Jesusa Lara Prieto and Don Antonio Oliva Vázquez, with the collaboration of the siblings Don Luis and Doña Carmen Antón García. Luis Antón was part of the group of university students who, in 1915, founded the journal Filosofía y Letras at the University of Madrid. The main objective of this journal was the modernization of the university and the development of humanistic and scientific research. Among the founding members of this group were, among others, the poet Vicente Aleixandre (Nobel Prize in Literature 1977), the historian Cayetano Alcázar, the art critic Enrique Lafuente Ferrari, the polymath Juan de Contreras, Marquis of Lozoya, and Pedro Sainz Rodríguez, one of the most prominent figures in the cultural and political life of the 20th century.
