Seminar on Art and Iconography "Marqués de Lozoya"

The “Marqués de Lozoya” Seminar on Art, directed by Drs. Alfonso Rodríguez y Gutiérrez de Ceballos, S.J., and Manuel Arias Martínez, is dedicated to the study of Art and Iconography in Spain, the Hispanic world, and the rest of Europe.

Over the years, the Seminar has organized numerous academic activities, such as the international conference “Artists as Collectors: Models and Variations from the Early Modern Period to the 20th Century,” symposiums on 17th-century Madrid drawing, and a lecture series on El Greco.

The results of the research have been published in the Bellas Artes series of the Fundación’s publishing house. Notable publications include La Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (1744–1808) by Claude Bedat, and La estampa religiosa en la España del Antiguo Régimen by Jesusa Vega and Javier Portús. As part of the Tesis Doctorales Cum Laude series are works such as La colección de dibujos Rabaglio: un ejemplo de la actividad de dos maestros emigrantes italianos en España (1737–1760) by Silvia Sugranyes Foletti, and La transfiguración del espacio litúrgico mediante la iconografía de Marko Ivan Rupnik by Emilio Delgado Martos.

The Seminar also publishes the biannual journal Cuadernos de Arte e Iconografía, which has devoted its most recent issues to figures such as Edward Ruscha, Gustavo de Maetzu, and Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo.

Under the guidance of this Seminar, the iconographic archive FICONOFUE, conceived by Prof. José Manuel Pita Andrade, has also been managed. The archive contains over 175,000 classified digital images of artworks, along with the main bibliographic references available for each.

"Bellas Artes" Series

The Seminar promotes, among its lines of publication, an Art series aimed at exploring diverse aspects that contribute to enriching research in this field from different perspectives. Studies on artistic figures, typologies, or themes help provide the scientific community with innovative contributions that may serve as references for future projects.
